Materials Required:
- Cotton Fabric (for Kurta, Pant, and Dupatta)
- Matching Thread
- Scissors
- Measuring Tape
- Sewing Machine
- Iron
- Fabric Chalk/Pencil
- Elastic (for pant, if needed)
- Lace, Buttons, or Embellishments (optional)
Step 1: Preparation & Materials
Materials Needed:
- Fabric: Cotton printed fabric (enough for the kurta, pant, and dupatta)
- Thread: Matching color
- Tools: Scissors, measuring tape, fabric chalk or marker, pins, and an iron
- Equipment: Sewing machine (or needle for hand sewing if preferred)
- Optional: Elastic (for the pant waist), decorative trims or buttons for finishing touches
Before You Begin:
- Take Accurate Measurements: Measure bust, waist, shoulder width, and length for the kurta; waist, hips, and inseam for the pants; and decide on the dimensions of your dupatta (commonly around 2.5 meters long and 110–120 cm wide).
Step 2: Pattern Making & Cutting
-
Draft Your Patterns:
- For the Kurta:
- Front and Back Panels: Draw two identical pieces based on your chest, waist, and desired length.
- Sleeves: Sketch a sleeve pattern that matches your arm length and preferred style (straight or slightly flared).
- For the Pant:
- Draw a simple straight-cut pant pattern using your waist, hip, and inseam measurements.
- For the Dupatta:
- Decide on a rectangular size (a typical size is around 2.5 meters in length and 110–120 cm in width).
-
Cutting the Fabric:
- Lay your fabric on a flat surface.
- Pin your paper patterns to the fabric using fabric chalk or marker.
- Carefully cut out all the pieces for the kurta (front, back, sleeves), the pant panels, and the dupatta.
Step 3: Sewing the Kurta
-
Assemble the Main Body:
- Shoulder Seams: Align the front and back panels at the shoulders and sew them together.
- Side Seams: With the right sides of the fabric together, sew the side seams from the armpit down to the hem.
-
Attach the Sleeves:
- Sew the sleeve pieces into the armhole openings. Make sure they are evenly aligned for comfort and a neat look.
-
Finishing Touches:
- Neckline & Hemming: Finish the neckline by adding a simple collar or binding. Hem the bottom edge of the kurta and the sleeves.
- Optional Embellishments: You can add decorative stitching, buttons, or lace as per your design.
Step 4: Sewing the Pant
-
Construct the Pant:
- Sewing the Legs: Take the two pant pieces (each leg) and sew along the inner leg seam.
- Side Seams: Sew the outer leg seams together.
- Crotch Area: Carefully join the front and back of the leg pieces at the crotch.
-
Finishing the Waist & Hem:
- Waistband: Attach a waistband. If you want a more fitted finish, add elastic inside the waistband.
- Hem the Bottom: Fold the bottom edges and sew to create a neat hem.
Step 5: Preparing the Dupatta
- Edge Finishing:
- Hem all the edges of the dupatta by folding them over and sewing neatly. This prevents fraying and gives a crisp finish.
- Optionally, add a decorative border along one or more edges.
Step 6: Final Touches
- Pressing:
- Iron all pieces (kurta, pant, and dupatta) to remove any wrinkles and to set the seams.
- Fitting Check:
- Try on the set to check for fit. Make any minor adjustments as needed for comfort and style.
- Embellishments:
- If desired, add final decorative details such as embroidery, prints, or additional stitching along the edges.
